HMS Edinburgh (D97) a Type 42 (Batch 3) Destroyer built by Cammell Laird of Birkenhead and launched on 14 April 1983, by Lady Anne Heseltine.
She officially entered service on 17 December 1985 and is the 6th ship to bear the name in the Royal Navy. Equipped with 40 Sea Dart missiles, 1 x 4.5in Mark 8 Mod 1 gun and 2 x Phalanx (CIWS). Her length is 463 ft with a displacement of 5,200 tons. Propulsion is from COGOG (Combined Gas or Gas) turbines, 2 x Olympus and 2 x Tyne, 2 shafts, producing a top speed of 30 knots.
Known as the 'Fortress of the Sea', she was the last Type 42 destroyer in service and decommissioned on the 6th June 2013.
